The movie Bio-Dome might be considered a total piece of crap, but living in a dome style, eco-friendly house is anything but crappy.
And thanks to Biodome Systems SRL, you could make living the dome life a reality.
The geodosic domes are made in Romania and come in 20 different models. Their metal frames and stone walls are extremely versatile, not to mention incredibly structurally sound and good for the environment.
How can something this cool be good for mother nature? Lead project manager Reamus Gall explains.
“Geodesic domes are extremely strong for their weight due to their omni triangulated surface that provides an inherently stable structure...[they have] a natural resistance to external factors like earthquakes up to 8.5 on the Richter scale, winds up to 320 km/h due to the aerodynamic shape and loads up to 20 tonnes per point of structure.”
And they're also a great all-weather living solution, to boot. You can stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter with minimal power consumption.
Because the domes' surface areas are much less than those of traditional housing structures, they're able to better sustain temperatures, i.e. hot/cold air is trapped more easily in the home. Natural lighting and solar gains throughout the day will help out your electricity bill, and the use of magnetic shades in the dome's glass panels help to minimize thermal energy loads.
The best part about the domes is that they can be used as pretty much anything: a low-cost greenhouse, full-blown house, observatory, or indoor pool.
Their smaller, Pollux model measures 16-feet in diameter and is 8-feet tall.
Currently, the company is only offering installations of these bad boys within Europe, but special arrangements could be made if you contact the company directly.
