Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger's relationship timeline began in 2012.
Suddenly out of nowhere in August 2012, Avril's reps were telling PEOPLE that the Canadian songstress was being bumped up from "Girlfriend" to fiancée. Who was the lucky guy? It was none other than Alberta's own Chad Kroeger. Evidently, the Nickelback frontman and the tie-obsessed pop-punk queen had been quietly dating for six months
Few people cared about the decade between them and were far more excited about Avril's 4-carat diamond ring. Hopefully she could still skate with that thing on! Chad popped the question on Aug. 8 after the two grew close while writing songs together. Hopefully they were odes to Canada's national animal: the beaver. A source told the outlet that Chad made Avril very happy. "Both of their families could not be more excited."
Almost a year later, PEOPLE reported that the couple wed on Canada Day, in France! That's right, on July 1, 2013, Avril said "I do" to Chad who said he couldn't wait to start their life together. Here's hoping they sealed this deal with a kiss and not "Shakin' Hands."
Sadly the marriage said "see ya later boy," in 2015.
Rumors of a split began swirling in September 2014 just one year after the newlyweds said "I'm With You," said Us Weekly. Apparently a source told the outlet that all of Los Angeles was aware of troubles in paradise, but outwardly the duo seemed fine.
Sadly that turned out not to be the case as one year later in September 2015, Avril dropped a divorce announcement on her Instagram. Beneath a "Photograph" of Avril and Chad on their wedding day, which is an odd choice, she said, "Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we've created many unforgettable moments. We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other."
In May 2024, Avril went on the Call Her Daddy podcast where she deftly avoided answering any questions about her dating life, though she did say she is an awesome partner. "I would date me. I cook. I'm a really big cook, really big into, like, the house and decorating, and I have a lot of fun with that," said Avril. Chad referenced a girlfriend in a November 2022 interview with PEOPLE but did not drop a name. Ideally she's not too "Far Away."
