Dixie D'Amelio and her sister Charli are two of the biggest stars on TikTok. Although they're both still teenagers, they have already been able to use their fame on social media to pursue other avenues for their talents. Now, Dixie is turning her attention to music. The 18-year-old just released a song called "Be Happy" and it features the social media star's vocals.
Can Dixie D'Amelio sing?
While it's likely that Dixie worked with skilled professionals to make the song "Be Happy" makes it pretty clear that Dixie can actually sing. Her voice is a sultry alto without much vibrato, but it's the kind of voice that could make her a success in the world of indie-pop. The song runs just over three minutes and suggests that Dixie's life isn't as perfect as it may seem.
'Be Happy' is all about Dixie's struggle with pretending to be happy.
The lyrics to the song suggest that Dixie is OK feeling sad. "Sometimes I don't wanna be happy / Don't hold it against me If I'm down just leave me there / Let me be sad," she sings in the song. Elsewhere, she sings about staying in when her friends want her to go out. She's "got chips on her shoulder," she sings. Even as she's used her music to speak to how she's feeling, Dixie has also pursued other possible careers using her platform.
Dixie has also done some work as an actor.
In addition to posting on TikTok along with her sister, Dixie has also acted in the YouTube series Attaway General. The show tells the story of four teenagers who become part of a prestigious hospital volunteer program. As they progress through the program, they come to rely on one another to survive, and bond over the difficulties they face in the program. The show's cast is composed entirely of stars from TikTok.
The show premiered on YouTube on May 20, and each episode runs for under 10 minutes. Apparently, they feature the kind of teen drama that a typical show with high school kids would. The difference, of course, is that all of the actors on this show also happen to be social media phenoms that bring an audience with them. Each of the show's six episodes has already garnered more than 2 million views.
Acting may not be in the cards for Dixie long term.
Although Dixie does have some singing chops, she may not be similarly gifted when it comes to acting. If the comments and reviews about Attaway General are to be believed, the show features some truly terrible performances from each of its leads.
"I've watched 2 YouTubers talk about #attawaygeneral and that stupidity of a show is what you get when you idolize tiktok stars who are incapable of doing anything but acting. I cringe from very deeeeeeep within," one person tweeted after watching the show.
"I made an account just to say how horrible this show is. It's just a bunch of talentless kids from tik tok which is the worst app ever created," another person wrote on IMDb.
