Darian Derrico is getting ready to start college!
At times, the college admissions process doesn't align with our hopes — and it appears that's the situation for Darian. In the June 25 episode of Doubling Down With the Derricos, she discovers that she didn't get accepted into her dream school, New York University.
"I felt awesome about my audition, but this rejection letter, it just makes me feel like I'm not good enough," Darian confesses. "It makes me rethink all of my choices."
Darian is visibly upset and disappointed, but her parents Karen and Deon, along with her grandmother Marian "GG" Derrico, offer the teenager their unwavering support.
"I am so proud of you for going on this journey. You worked your butt off and I just love you for that," Karen says. "So you go upstairs and you go rest your little tired mind, giving this your all, that's what counts."
Despite her family's encouragement, Darian feels the sting of rejection and confesses she's reconsidering her "choices." Though she keeps her struggle with the news from her parents, Karen and Deon fear the rejection will damage their daughter's self-esteem.
"I don't want her to look at it like rejection," Karen explains in a confessional. "I want her to look at it like a redirection. It's redirecting her to exactly where she's supposed to be."
Deon says, "I think my biggest concern is knowing how to get her to overcome this. You know, teenagers, they lack understanding that life will give you something that appears to be bad that'll wind up being for your better good."
Karen also understands the importance of a united effort in boosting her daughter's self-confidence, emphasizing, "I want to make sure she doesn't have a fear of not being good enough."
Darian Derrico wants to pursue a career in music.
For those unaware, Darian's deep passion lies in music! She's an aspiring singer who often showcases her vocal talents on Instagram. In the June 25 episode of Doubling Down with the Derricos, she even spontaneously sings a song!
While touring the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a staff member leads Darian and her parents to an auditorium. He explains, "We do a lot of concerts in here. We make sure that all of our students have the connections in the industry that they want to be in to be as successful as they want to be."
Darian then asks the UNLV staff member about the most popular genre that students pursue at the school. The man explains that their music students study various genres, from jazz to opera.
"What's really cool is you get to take classes with everybody," he adds. Darian then asks, "An opera singer might work with, like, an R&B singer?" to which he responds, "Yeah. I mean, they could be in the same studio. There's a lot of stuff happening."
As she and her parents prepare to leave the auditorium, Darian pauses to "take the stage for a moment," treating fans to a glimpse of her singing voice with a brief tune. Deon and Karen enthusiastically cheer on their daughter, with Deon playfully announcing to an imaginary audience, "Darian Derrico, everybody!"
