Netflix's newest mystery thriller Enola Holmes stars Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown as the titular character, who is the teenage sister of the infamous crime solver Sherlock Holmes.

From the epic fight scenes (including the creative weaponization of an average teapot) to the star-studded cast — which also includes Helena Bonham Carter, Henry Cavill, and Sam Claflin as fellow members of the Holmes family — viewers are hoping that Enola Holmes will simply be the first in a film series.

The Netflix breakout hit is based on a set of six Young Adult novels by Nancy Springer. The film adaptation is fairly loyal to the first book in the series, The Case of the Missing Marquess. Fans are, therefore, looking to the print editions for further information about what could happen if Netflix commissions another movie in the series.

Does Enola Holmes marry in the books?

When the book series begins, Enola Holmes has just celebrated her 14th birthday, so it's understandable that marriage isn't on the horizon for the fictional character.

She runs away to London to investigate her mother's disappearance, and to avoid Mycroft (played by Sam Claflin in the film), whose plan is for her to attend finishing school and ultimately get married off.

While there, she decides to look into Lord Tewksbury's disappearance, and she wants it to be the first big case that she solves. In the movie, she coincidentally runs into him, which is a main difference between the two.

Though many viewers felt the chemistry between Enola and Lord Tewksbury in the film, the character is not present in any of the five subsequent novels in the series. Enola does not get married in the book series.

Does Enola Holmes have a love interest?

If there are more films in the Enola Holmes universe and they closely follow the books, then the character will not be getting a love interest.

The Nancy Springer novel series focused on Enola's mystery solving abilities and her family relationships with brothers Mycroft and Sherlock. Her ultimate estrangement from her brothers has largely to do with her desire to be independent, despite her young age. It makes sense, then, that romance is on the back burner for the character.

The plots of the six novels is mainly focused on the mysteries at hand, the development of various friendships, and how the young female characters do not need to be beholden to anyone else.

In the fourth book, The Case of the Peculiar Pink Fan, Enola even helps her friend Lady Cecily avoid getting married against her wishes.

But, Lord Tewksbury (and Louis Partridge) have been getting a lot of attention online, so it wouldn't be too surprising if a potential film sequel diverged from the novels in order to continue including the character. If this did happen, it's unclear whether or not this would entail him becoming Enola's romantic interest.

A sequel has also not officially been greenlit at this time.

Enola Holmes is now available to stream on Netflix.
