'His Dark Materials' Season 2 will likely include a few major deaths.

“Cittàgazze is the ‘city of magpies’, built on greed,” lead writer Jack Thorne told Empire about what lies ahead in the upcoming season. “What Philip does beautifully is put these two very pure-hearted children in the middle of it, and allow them to wrestle with what their destiny should be. One of them has learned not to trust thanks to the events of Series 1, and the other has learned not to trust because of the events of his life. They’re brought together in this explosive combination.”

Fans of the trilogy know that Will is destined to wield the Subtle Knife, which has the ability to "slice between the worlds." In the trailer fans see that a great war is on the horizon and the Magisterium is hoping to conquer the other world.

"The child (aka Lyra) will bring the end of the great war," the witches, who are also gearing up for battle ahead, predict in the Season 2 trailer.

How will the 'The Subtle Knife' book compare to Season 2?

While the writers have stuck closely to Pullman's storyline in Season 1, it has not been confirmed if a few key details in Season 2 will be altered.

Fans of the book series know that there are a bunch of key character deaths in The Subtle Knife, but, will they come to fruition in the show?

In the second book, Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) is killed helping Will's father John Parry (Andrew Scott) escape. Though Will eventually reunites with his long lost dad, John is killed by a vengeful love-stricken witch.

The book ends with Will following in his late father's footsteps and proceeding to go find Lord Asriel to give him the knife. But, he soon finds that his friend Lyra is missing and the witches who were looking after her had been drained by Spectres.
