In July 2019, Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland and The Bachelorette alum Wells Adams got engaged. The couple shared a heartwarming video of their proposal followed by a slideshow of some of their momentous pictures with one another. If you aren’t familiar with Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams’ relationship, they share quite the modern love story. Find out how the lovebirds met!
So, how did Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams meet?
The two met on Twitter during the summer of 2017 while Wells was the bartender on Bachelor in Paradise. Fans quickly took note of the two flirting publicly with each other. However, we can technically date their first interaction back even further. In 2016 during Wells’ participation on The Bachelor with JoJo Fletcher, Sarah took no shame in expressing her crush on her now fiancé through social media.
Despite meeting in the summer of '17, it wasn’t until later that October that the couple sparked serious speculation after sharing their Halloween costumes on Instagram. The two went as Dustin and Eleven from Stranger Things coupled with the caption “11 hangin’ out with a 10 #strangerthings.” In November 2017, the couple officially confirmed the rumors to be true on E! News. Though Sarah was the first to show interest, it was Wells who slid into Sarah’s DMs.
With less than a year of dating, in August 2018, the two moved in together.
After less than a year of making their relationship public, the couple moved in together. This only allowed their relationship to grow even further. However, Wells did have a concern about their dogs. In an episode of his podcast, Your Favorite Thing, Wells said “I’m most concerned about my dog and her dogs… Carl sleeps on my bed. And her dog Boo sleeps on her bed. What’s going to happen?"
Luckily, everything worked out and both dogs equally share the bed with their parents. Since their relationship, Sarah and Wells have spent time with each other's families. Wells is super supportive of Sarah, who’s gone through multiple kidney transplants and dialysis and has endometriosis. Talk about the perfect man.
Fast forward to 2019, the couple got engaged.
Sarah and Wells took their engagement to social media with the most heartfelt captions. Sarah shared their announcement with photos of their engagement coupled with a caption that read, “That can’t eat, can’t sleep, reach for the stars, over the fence, world series kind of stuff.”
Wells shared an equally romantic caption saying, “I’ll be Johnny, you be June. But forever.” This caption was attached to a video showing their romantic proposal with "I Like To Be Me When I'm With You" by Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors playing in the background. Doesn't get much more romantic than that!
Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams postponed their wedding due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following their engagement, Sarah and Wells seemed excited to solidify their romance. The couple beamed on Instagram in 2019 as they showed off Sarah’s stunning engagement ring. In their engagement pictures, Sarah shows everyone just how gorgeous — and might we say big — the ring is. Though this is a small token of their love and it’s quite beautiful, it seems they don’t need the ring to express how meant for each other they are.
Unfortunately, less than a year after the engagement, Sarah and Wells were forced to push their wedding. At the time, he actress confirmed that they were still planning to get married, but the COVID-19 pandemic halted their initial plans for a ceremony.
“We’ve put all planning on hold,” Sarah said on The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons—Ever! in June 2020, per Us Weekly. “All of my family is mostly on the East Coast, so for them to fly out… and of course, with my health risks, we want to be as safe as possible.”
While Wells and Sarah were bummed they missed out on their wedding, the couple paid homage to what would’ve been their big day in August 2020. They posted photos from their “fake wedding” on Instagram, and Sarah shared the details of their post-quarantine nuptials.
“It was my first time out of the house out of quarantine, and we went to a winery, and we went with all of our friends," Sarah would later share on The Ellen Show. "All of us got tested, our family, our like, best man, maid of honor."
Sarah and Wells still haven’t had an official wedding. But, they are still together and plan on walking down the aisle one day, proving to hopeless romantics across the globe that sliding into your crush’s DMs can work.
