The most recent episode of Yellowstone confirmed what many fans had long suspected. In the episode, we learn that Jamie Dutton, a character played by Wes Bentley, is not actually the biological son of Kevin Costner's John Dutton. Instead, he was adopted at a young age and was folded into the Dutton clan as if he was one of John's actual children.

Who are Jamie's biological parents on 'Yellowstone'?

Jamie was born as James Randall to Garrett and Phyllis Mary Randall. When he was just 3 months old, though, his father beat his mother to death. After that shocking and violent incident, Jamie was adopted by Evelyn and John Dutton and has lived as one of their sons ever since. Unfortunately, it seems that John decided never to tell Jamie that he was adopted, which led him to discover the information on his own.

How does Jamie find out he's adopted?

After receiving a copy of his birth certificate from his assistant, Jamie learns the truth and spirals into an identity crisis. He asks his assistant to track down Garrett, who had been in jail for killing his mother. Then, he confronts John about this newly discovered information. The scene that unfolds afterward features Jamie venting his frustration about being kept in the dark all this time.

Eventually, Jamie manages to calm himself down, and John explains that Jamie's real mother was killed before she ever really got the chance to love her son. He also said that, while John and Evelyn weren't his biological parents, they were the people who had really loved him throughout his life.

"I protected you, I guided you, I loved you, you can call me whatever you want, Jamie, but I will call you son, because I have earned the right, it is the hardest thing I have ever done," John says in the episode. He also tells Jamie that, ultimately, it's his decision who he wants to be his father. It's a dark and tense moment, one that also acts as the final note in the episode.

Who will Jamie choose to be?

John's speech continues, as he tells Jamie that, if he wants to, he'll be able to track Garrett down. "You are a resourceful man so I am sure you can find him and you can look at his black f--king heart, his rotten soul. You can look into his eyes, Jamie and you get to choose. You can choose who you call father," John says. Then, he goes to bed, leaving things on a cliffhanger.

It's not clear what Jamie will choose to do with this new information, but the revelation has certainly sent shockwaves through the fan community. It also confirms what many had long suspected, and creates a whole new wrinkle in Jamie's identity. Will he choose to identify with the family that loved him and raised him, or will his blood relatives win out? The answer to that question and so many others will likely come in future episodes of the show's third season.
