Is Kiefer Sutherland Married? His Daughter Has Followed in His Acting Footsteps

Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland — son of the late veteran actor Donald Sutherland — is a star in his own right.

After Donald divorced from Kiefer’s mother, Shirley Douglas, in 1970, Kiefer ended up following in Donald’s acting footsteps.

Kiefer has been in the public eye since he was a kid, although he made a name for himself as an actor in the 1980s around the same time he first got married.

So is Kiefer Sutherland still married today, and does he have any kids?

In 1987, Kiefer married Camelia Kath, who was the widow of guitarist and singer Terry Kath, known for leading the band Chicago. Little is known about their short-lived relationship, except that they had one daughter together, Sarah Sutherland, and later divorced in 1990. He also became a stepfather to Camelia’s first daughter, Michelle Kath, making Kiefer a step-grandfather to to Michelle’s two sons with actor Adam Sinclair.

Famously, in 1989, Kiefer met and began dating Julia Roberts when they co-starred in Flatliners. Their relationship was huge fodder for the gossip columnists — it was public and passionate showmance. While the wedding was scheduled for June 14, 1991, they called it off shortly after rumors of affairs (on both sides) circulated.

In 1996, Kiefer tried his hand at love again with Kelly Winn. After Kiefer’s very public debacle with Julia, however, he kept details of his romance with Kelly out of the spotlight.

Their marriage lasted only three years, leading to their separation in 1999. Even still, the divorce wasn’t finalized until 2008, four years after Kiefer initially filed the papers.

Now, Kiefer isn’t married, but he does have a special someone in his life. He and model Cindy Vela started dating in 2014, although they kept details of their relationship largely under wraps. They weren’t seen together in public until 2017, when they got engaged. Cindy accompanied Kiefer to the 2017 Glastonbury Festival, where he played with his country band.

A source told Day & Night in 2017, “Kiefer is totally in love. He popped the question earlier this year and they are very happy.” While they didn’t share the wedding date, it’s possible that Kiefer and Cindy secretly married in the seven years since. In 2019, Kiefer shared with The Telegraph that they were living happily together in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles.

Through all his public and private relationships, Kiefer only has one child (that we know of). He and his first wife, Camelia, welcomed their daughter, Sarah Sutherland, on Feb. 18, 1988. Like her father and grandfather, Sarah is an actor.

After studying at the Crossroads Drama Conservatory as a teen in Los Angeles, she attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied acting. In her final semester, she wrote and starred in her own one-woman play, The Skin of a Grape. While she may not be as much of a household name as her relatives, Sarah is a well-known actor for her role as Catherine Meyer, Selina’s daughter, in Veep.
