1975 Singer Matty Healy Is Engaged to Gabbriette Bechtel After 9 Months of Dating

A year after his messy fling with Taylor Swift caused both headlines and a massive backlash (as well as several songs on Taylor's new album), 1975 lead singer Matty Healy appears to be engaged. Matty seemed to confirm the news while attending a recent Charli XCX concert.

Following the news of his engagement, many wanted to learn more about Matty's new bride-to-be, and how exactly he went about confirming that they were engaged. Here's what we know about the controversial singer's new engagement.

Matty and Gabbriette were spotted at a Charli XCX show in New York. Later on the evening of June 11, 2024, Gabbriette seemed to confirm their engagement in a reference to both Charli and the meme generator Brat.

“MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT,” Gabbriette wrote in the caption accompanying a photo of a black ring on her finger. Matty also reshared the photo after he hopped on Twitter to post a bunch of memes.

It isn't clear whether Matty proposed at the concert, but Matty and Charli have long been close friends for some time. Charli is currently engaged to 1975 drummer George Daniel. There was even speculation that Charli's song "Sympathy is a knife” included references to Matty's relationship with Taylor Swift, and Charli's personal hope that that relationship would soon come to an end.

Matty and Gabbriette have been romantically linked since September 2023. There's speculation online about whether the engagement is real or simply another effort by Matty to troll his audience.

Both options seem distinctly possible, especially since Matty has become relatively well-known online for saying strange things and simply making things up whenever he fancies.

Although The 1975 have been prominent band for some time, Matty become much more well known following his fling with Taylor Swift in the summer of 2023. The two only dated for a relatively short time (and had actually been romantically linked once before), but the relationship coincided with the start of her Eras Tour. Matty came under significant scrutiny for his often intentionally controversial public remarks.

Swifties are a force all their own, and many of them were less than thrilled that Taylor had chosen to link up with someone who was evidently problematic (and is also a recovering heroin addict). Although the two seemed to bask in the controversy for a time, the relationship eventually fizzled out. Taylor and Matty seem to have moved on to relationships that are more serious and possibly permanent.

Whether Matty is engaged to Gabbriette or not, this relationship has been much longer than his fling with Taylor. Because she isn't the most famous woman on the planet, though, the relationship has also received less attention, which may ultimately be better for both Matty's mental health and the health of the relationship as a whole.
