Almost one year after Aaron Carter passed away, his fiancée Melanie Martin uploaded one of his TikToks to her Instagram. She captioned the video, "Keeping this in my heart forever." In the video, he wishes Melanie a happy birthday and expresses his desire for her to have an amazing day. Aaron then goes on to say that he "loves her with all his heart" and acknowledges all of the difficult times they've faced together.
According to People, the couple started dating in early 2020 and by June they were engaged. A little over a year later in November 2021, Melanie gave birth to their son who they named Prince Carter. Sadly Aaron passed away Nov. 5, 2022, just shy of Prince's first birthday. Melanie was of course devastated by the news. Here's what we know about her life since Aaron passed away.
What is Melanie Martin doing now? She's booked and busy being a great mom.
Less than two weeks after Aaron died, Melanie took to Instagram to express her grief. Beneath a carousel of photos of the two of them, many of which included Prince, Melanie shared what Aaron meant to her. "Aaron, you saved me from a fake life and showed me what true love is," she wrote. "You always believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself."
She also mentioned Aaron's demons and struggles, which included his multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, acute anxiety, and manic depression diagnoses. Try as she might, Melanie could only do so much for him. Four months later in March 2023, Melanie posted a different kind of message to Instagram. This time she was opening up about the bullying she and her son had received since Aaron's death. The fans that Aaron loved so much were lashing out at Melanie and her son.
The post also discusses Aaron's estate which suggests people might have been accusing Melanie of being a gold digger. She assured everyone that Aaron's estate was going to Prince. Any money taken out of it was being used for his care such as education, food, clothing, and so on. To keep Aaron's legacy intact, Melanie planned to use social media to combat bullying and harassment. Anything she sold in his name would go towards Prince's needs.
Melanie's social media is filled with videos and images of Prince truly living his best life. There are trips to Disneyland, a second birthday celebration, and times where the two of them are just goofing around. There are also a lot of videos of Aaron. It's clear that Melanie really loved Aaron and misses him dearly.
Two years after Aaron Carter died, Melanie Martin filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
Fox News reported that in November 2023, Melanie filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of Prince and herself. Court documents obtained by the outlet state that Melanie is "going after pharmacies and doctors for over-prescribing medication to Carter with 'no medical justification.'" She alleges that multiple doctors over-prescribed Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, and Alprazolam which she believes contributed to his death.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office listed Aaron's official cause of death as drowning with a secondary cause of Difluoroethane and Alprazolam, which were found in his system. His death was ruled an accident. "Difluoroethane is an aerosol propellant found in spray cans, and alprazolam is commonly referred to as Xanax," per Fox News.
As of the time of this writing, the lawsuit is still active. In May 2024, Radar Online obtained court documents that say Dr. John Faber's legal team is "struggling to prepare for trial due to Martin and her son of not answering simple questions." Faber is a dentist who treated Carter from 2020 to 2022. Melanie accused him of not checking a database to make sure Aaron wasn't already prescribed controlled substances. Faber asked Melanie's legal team to be more specific regarding the accusations.
