A TikTok couple's post that they later explained was a joke ended up angering throngs of folks on the popular social media platform, including a wave of individuals who thought that the behavior exhibited in the clip was the germination of a competitive relationship between mother and daughter.
@Justagirl1551 recorded herself sneaking away a cookie from a batch that was specifically requested by their 6-year-old daughter. TikTok blasted the outcome of the video, which you can watch below:
"Anybody else's boyfriend makes three racks of ribs on a Monday after he works and churro cheesecake cookies?" she asks to the audience before panning the camera over to her face as she watches her boyfriend place the ribs inside of bags.
"Can I have a cookie?" she then asks her boyfriend.
He begins to explain to her why that wouldn't be cool, because their daughter Rachel asked for the cookies, so she's the one who gets to try it first.
"Rachel is the first one that has to get one because she wanted them and she's in bed," he says, washing his hands in the sink. The TikToker flips the phone around to show her face on camera, "Rachel's our 6-year-old daughter.
She smiles and begins to get up off of the chair as her partner begins to talk. "Yeah and I made those cookies because she wanted me to and I wanted her to feel special so she gets to have the first one, so she feels special," he says as she walks up to the tray of cookies.
She grabs one of the desserts from the tray, smirks, and then places it in her mouth, taking a bite.
"You can't have one," he tells her as she enjoys the food.
"That makes sense," she says, slightly laughing into the camera. "That's very nice," she tells him, walking away.
"Babe?" he asks as the video ends.
Folks who responded to @Justagirl1551's video didn't find the behavior cute or endearing — numerous commenters remarked they thought what she did was gross and disrespectful.
One person simply asked: "Are you OK? Like in the head?" Someone else asked: "Were you unloved as a child?"
Another user, who goes by Jessica Rabbit, seemed to agree with @Justagirl1551's actions, writing: "Can’t just hold those cookies from us."
But there were a lot of people who thought this was a clear instance of a parent "bullying" their kids: "Girl's first bully is often her own mother," one person said.
Another remarked: "Imagine being jealous of your own 6-year-old daughter ... insane."
Someone else replied: "It’s giving me … I’m jealous of a 6-year-old"
"Ew. This is exactly where the mother being jealous of the daughter dynamic starts," someone else replied.
Another remarked: "You're kinda disgusting for this, but I'll let the stitches speak for themselves, go Dad!"
Another TikToker named @notyourbuddy2 replied to the post, explaining why he thought it was so gnarly of her to take one of the cookies that were meant for their daughter after the dad explained why it'd be best to save them for the morning so she could try them out and feel like he did something special just for her.
"This is gonna be the video that gets me canceled on here," Buddy says at the top of the video before explaining the situation: "That father made cookies for his 6-year-old daughter. She specifically asked for those cookies. He made them for her, told her she could be the first one to have one."
He went on: "The mother thinks it's cute to go take a cookie. Even though he says 'no, I made them for her, let her have the first one, I want her to feel special.' You have a father going out of his way to make the daughter feel special. And you choose to ruin it. With a little nasty smirk on your face, like you're so sneaky you get to ruin the plan."
Buddy's rant wasn't done there as he continued to dunk on @Justagirl1551 for her video: "Now he either gets to lie to his daughter and say she's the first one to have one, [or] throw Mom under the bus and say 'no, Mom took the first one even though I told her not to,' or just say 'No, Mom had one first' if she asks."
He also had a message for folks who argued that Mom taking the cookie wasn't that big of a deal to begin with: "If you say it's not a big deal, why was it a big deal for the mom to have one? I listened to a female psychologist the other day say that sometimes mothers get jealous of their daughter. Because before the daughter comes, she's the most important woman in her husband's life."
He went on: "And I don't know this woman but this definitely felt like a way for her to just steal a little bit of thunder from the dad and the daughter."
"Let the dad make the daughter feel special," he said into the camera, capping off his video.
However, @Justagirl1551's boyfriend posted a follow-up response video stating that the entire situation was scripted and that they uploaded the video as a joke — it wasn't meant to be taken seriously and both he and his significant other were taken aback from the wave of negativity that resulted in response to the clip.
