Super Size Me director Morgan Spurlock passed away due to complications from cancer on May 23, 2024. His brother wrote the obituary and mentioned those he left behind.
In the announcement of his passing, Morgan’s loved ones were mentioned, “A loving and dedicated friend, father, brother and son, Morgan leaves behind two sons — Laken and Kallen; mother Phyllis Spurlock; father Ben (Iris); brothers Craig (Carolyn) and Barry (Buffy); multiple nieces and nephews; and former spouses Alexandra Jamieson and Sara Bernstein, the mothers of his children.” However, Morgan was married three times.
Morgan Spurlock was married three times and each marriage ending in divorce.
Morgan was married to Priscilla Sommer from 1996 until 2003. This marriage didn’t produce any children.
Morgan married Alex Jamieson in 2006. You might recognize Alex from her role in Super Size Me or Morgan's follow-up. The couple had a son, Laken James Spurlock, on Dec. 9, 2006. Morgan’s 2008 documentary Where in the World Is Osama bin Laden? is dedicated to Laken. Morgan finds out Alex is pregnant in the film and Laken is born via an underwater birth in the picture.
That marriage ended in 2011. Somewhat related, Morgan was pretty accurate in his guess on where Osama bin Laden was hiding, only about 124 miles away from where he was ultimately found and killed.
Morgan’s third and final marriage was with fellow filmmaker Sara Bernstein. The couple wed in 2016 and welcomed their son Kallen Marcus Spurlock on May 22, 2016. Sara filed for divorce in March 2021.
On May 24, 2024, the day of Morgan’s death announcement, US Weekly reported that Morgan and Sara finally settled their divorce in February 2024.
Similar to how Morgan's second wife appeared in multiple documentaries made by Morgan, Sara also works in the documentary field. She's currently the President of Imagine Documentaries. Some of her recent projects include Judy Blume Forever, Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming with Dave Letterman, The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari, Louis Armstrong's Black & Blues, Downfall: The Case Against Boeing, Lucy & Desi, We Feed People, Leave No Trace, Julia, Who Are You Charlie Brown?, and DADS.
Morgan has been mostly out of the spotlight since 2017.
Following Morgan’s death, many wanted to better understand his disappearance from public life. In December 2017, Morgan admitted on Twitter that he had sexually harassed a former assistant. He also admitted to being unfaithful to every partner he ever had, his wives included. Morgan said that he was accused of sexual assault in college. Morgan stepped down from his television production company soon after his Twitter confessions.
Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! T was Morgan's final film in 2017. The documentary was supposed to be widely released via YouTube Red after its September 2017 premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. After the December 2017 revelations, the film was dropped by YouTube Red and pulled from the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.
