An Alabama woman named Alyssa (@Alyssa.Glavan) recently shared a shocking revelation on TikTok about her work experience that has quickly climbed to 147K views.
In a direct-to-camera confessional, Alyssa claims she discovered a hidden camera in a bathroom smoke detector while working as a nanny for the owner of a local AC company.
“OK, so I am making this video from the airport. I was a nanny for Bethancourt AC and Heating. I recently saw a post on Mandeville Mommas about a local AC company, the man in charge getting [charged with] 11 counts of video voyeurism. Whoever posted it has the story mixed up. So I was their nanny and I'm gonna attach receipts,” Alyssa alleges, setting the stage for the shocking admission.
Alyssa continues, “One day I was using the bathroom and I looked in front of me because I had dropped some Q-tips. I went to pick the Q-tips up and I see a smoke detector in the closet, in the bottom of the closet, in the bathroom.” She realized something was amiss and decided to investigate further.
“OK so if you look right there, that is the camera part. So I made a few phone calls, figured out it was a camera. I took it off the wall and saw that there was an SD card in the back," she says, adding that she scanned the QR code on the back and a site popped up confirming that it was a "secret spy cam."
Understanding the gravity of the situation, Alyssa immediately acted. “So I took it to the police. I had their baby with me. I called the mom, said there was like a medical emergency and I needed somebody to come get their baby, but I obviously wasn't going to stay at their house," she says.
The TikToker continues, "So the detectives went through the stuff. He got charged with 11 counts of video voyeurism, which is just from that one camera that he had in the bathroom that I was using. But I do believe that they're still investigating.”
Alyssa's video struck a chord with TikTok, who flooded the comments with support. Alyssa herself had the top comment, admitting, “I have been struggling with knowing what to do with the information but it has been a few weeks since he posted bail and nothing has been made public so I figured it was time I spoke up.”
Commenters did not hold back in their criticism of the perpetrator, and many folks related to Alyssa's story. “This has happened to me by a family friend," someone wrote. "Sue their home insurance company for personal liability and get paid babe 😌.”
Another person added a practical tip: “Omg this is wild, I’m so sorry! A tip for anyone reading: there are apps that can detect hidden cameras if you’re ever suspicious, staying in a hotel, etc.”
The practice of parents spying on their nannies, often through hidden cameras, is a controversial topic. Although specific statistics on the frequency of this practice are scarce, anecdotal evidence suggests it is not uncommon. Websites like HowsMyNanny.com allow parents to report on nanny behaviors, clearly revealing a broader trend of parental surveillance.
There have been numerous related stories that have gone viral on social media where folks claimed to have spotted hidden cameras inside of rental units they've been staying at that presumably were placed there by unscrupulous Airbnb hosts.
In fact, folks have even gone so far as to publish handy tips and tricks folks can follow to try and spot some common masking attempts voyeurs utilize when trying to cover up the fact they're spying on guests. Some customers who've booked rooms through the popular room-sharing application have even called out hosts for recording audio in home cameras as well.
Then there was the case of this one woman who spotted a receipt that seemed to suggest their host purchased spy equipment, and this person who thought the sprinklers in the unit they were staying in seemed a bit suspicious.
TikTok has become a crucial hub for folks to share their personal stories and receive community support. Alyssa’s video not only brought to light a seriously criminal issue but also provided a open forum for others to share their similar experiences and advice.
