The Gist:

  • The phrase "ooga booga" is trending on Instagram.
  • If you comment it on a post, the translation mentions a woman's private part and it's unclear why.

The internet is weird. Things mean things that you wouldn't expect. There are so many codewords. For example, the slang term Colorado campfire has nothing to do with camping in the Centennial state and actually refers to a sexual act. Moreover, the term a burger and a grape snow cone is a euphemism for a sexual act, too. It seems almost impossible to keep up with this online lingo.

Well, now there's another weird thing online. However, it's not really slang, but just a really odd translation. It has come to Instagram's attention that if you type "ooga booga," two seemingly gibberish phrases into the comment section of a post, it will translate into a not-so-family-friendly phrase that seemingly refers to a lady's private parts. We explain what it means below.

What does ooga booga mean on Instagram?

"Ooga booga," a phrase not found in any language known to man, has become a viral sensation. All over the internet, folks are encouraging and/or daring others to type ooga booga into the comment section of an Instagram post. But why?

Well, as you may already know, Instagram captions and comments on posts are translated automatically based on the language they’re written in and the language settings of the person viewing them.

And when "ooga booga" commented on Instagram, the platform provides a very unexpected translation. "Ooga booga," when translated on Instagram, means "please be careful with the p---y."

Is this a glitch or some type of coded message? It's unclear. All we know is that folks are going wild over the phrase and cannot stop commenting it all over the platform. In fact, everyone either wants to try it out themselves or trick their friend into commenting it.

The first trace of "ooga booga" on the internet was in February 2023 when a Reddit user posted about it on the platform in a post titled "Amusing Instagram Translation."

In that post, variations of the term were also discussed. Apparently, "ooga shooga" translates to "take a bath gay." And if you add different emojis to the ending of ooga booga, it slightly changes the translation, but still refers to a woman's private part.

This is all interesting information, but we can't help but wonder why.
