Politics are often practiced like fandom for someone's favorite sports franchise — folks will vehemently decry the opposition and root for their "home team" at all costs and if a member of their family, heaven forbid, happens to cheer for the rival squad, well, tensions can mount and tempers will more than likely flare up.
However TikToker Ashton Layh (@ashton.layh) uploaded a lighter side of the allegiances people make to certain party denominations to show that oftentimes one's allegiance to the colors red or blue all start to disappear once the color green appears.
That's because she decided to prank her liberal father by getting him on camera as part of a faux-scholarship application she says is from a die-hard Republican organization.
In the video, she makes bold-faced lies about her dad's dedication to the GOP and the both of them can barely keep a straight face.
TikTokers who reacted to the clip, both those who said they were liberal or more conservative minded, said that they cared less about the politics being referenced in the video, and more about the clear love the two have for each other in the video.
"Republican scholarship prank on my liberal dad," she writes in a text overlay of her video before looking to the camera as she holds two sheets of paper before her: "All right, you ready?" she asks her father.
"You're not recording," he says, seemingly oblivious to the gag that's about to be pulled on him.
"Yes I am, it's right there," she replies.
She begins her video by reading off of a sheet of paper into the camera: "Hi everyone, my name is Ashton Layh and I'm so honored to introduce you to my father Brian. I would first like to thank you so much for your consideration as a finalist for the $30,000 Big R scholarship," she states as part of her faux-bid.
"This scholarship would help me make my dreams come true and I'm so grateful for the opportunity. For the Big R scholarship I was asked to make a video with the person who has always inspired me to become a strong, independent Republican young woman."
After she drops this bomb, her father seemingly attempts to suppress a smile. "And that person is my dad," she says, putting her hand on his shoulder.
"Since a young age, my dad has instilled the hardworking, traditional family values of the Republican party into—" It's at this point she notices her father is laughing.
"Stop, Dad, it's for $30,000," she says, stifling her own laughter. She continues from her earlier speech: "— into our household." She then murmurs to him, "I'll have to cut that out."
She goes on with her speech: "During the election of 2020, my dad went door to door gaining votes for Donald Trump." He is unable to keep a straight face and begins to crack up laughing into the camera again.
"Stop! Stop!" she says, cracking up as well. "It's for a lot of money. Stop." She continues her speech: "When Joe Biden stole the presidency my dad personally donated from his retirement funds to the Trump administration, pro-life organizations, and the GOP of North Carolina."
The last bit, again, was too much for her father to handle and he immediately began erupting with laughter again. "I always admire how he puts God and his country first. I would not be — stop!" she says again, urging him to try and keep it together so she could win the tuition check.
"Stop laughing, it's for a scholarship!" she cries, continuing on: "I would not be the well-raised Republican student I am without the influence of my father. Thank you," she says, laughing into the camera.
Her father stands up, his face red from having to try and keep quiet from all the lies she just shilled into the lens.
"Oh my god," he says, still laughing as the video cuts out.
Do you have political die-hard parents who staunchly support particular members of Senate and Congress due to the respective parties who endorse them? How do you think they would react if you put them in a similar setup?
