'The 100' spinoff: What is the release date of the prequel?

There have been numerous rumors that The 100 was working on a spinoff, which was confirmed by the show's creator Jason Rothenberg in February.

"Two more days on The 100 Prequel (not called Anaconda, by the way)," Jason tweeted February 10. "So proud of this amazing crew. So excited for you to meet this new cast."

At the time, several outlets were reporting the name of The 100 spinoff was going to be titled ANACONDA, which caused some confusion. Jason clarified that the spinoff wasn't yet titled.

He followed up the previous tweet with another and wrote, "To clarify... the S7 episode title of the prequel is ANACONDA." Adding, "The title of the new (potential) series has not been released yet. #The100 #The100Prequel."

Deadline reported in October 2019 that the showrunner was given the greenlight by The CW for a backdoor-pilot production order to introduce the new spinoff during the final seventh season of The 100. The potential pilot episode aired on July 8 and was set in the past, 97 years ago to be exact.

Unfortunately, The CW has not yet given the official greenlight if The 100 prequel will be happening or scrapped. If it does get the go-ahead, we expect the show to air in 2021 or possibly in the spring of 2022.

What is 'The 100' spinoff going to be about?

Instead of being set in the same timeframe as The 100, the upcoming spinoff is going another direction. It's going to be a prequel where the viewers get to see how the nuclear war happened and how the earth came to be as destroyed as it was in The 100

Deadline describes the new Untitled spin off as:

"It starts with the end of the world — a nuclear apocalypse that wipes out most of the human population on Earth — and follows a band of survivors on the ground as they learn to cope in a dangerous world while fighting to create a new and better society from the ashes of what came before."

The producers and showrunner are still on the project for the untitled spinoff of The 100, so it sounds like viewers and fans of the show will be able to expect the same level of drama and scares as the original series.

The 100 is currently airing Season 7 on The CW Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
