More than a year after Season 2 debuted in May of 2019, the Danish post-apocalyptic series The Rain is back for Season 3 — and the plotlines have never felt more relevant. The series, which debuted in 2018 on Netflix, centers around the survivors of a deadly virus that infected thousands through rainfall in Scandinavia.
Siblings Simone Andersen (Alba August) and Rasmus Andersen (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) were able to live after quarantining in a bunker.
Six years after the initial rainfall, the two want to emerge in the hopes of finding their scientist father, who is missing. But, the other survivors force them out to help them look for a cure. The third season dropped on Netflix on Aug. 6, and the status of the show's future has been revealed.

Will 'The Rain' return for Season 4?
In June of 2019, the official Twitter page for The Rain confirmed that Netflix's first-ever Danish series would conclude after three seasons. The tweet also served as the official announcement that the show had been renewed for Season 3.
"Survival Squad: We'll see you in 2020 for the third and final season," the tweet read.
There has been no explicit confirmation as to why the series has been canceled, but Netflix has a track record of ending each original series after two to three seasons.
But, unlike The Get Down, Sense 8, or The OA, The Rain got an official final season. The finale of Season 3 provided closure for the main characters, and the storylines were wrapped up.
How did 'The Rain' end? SPOILERS.
The plot of the third season takes place just a few months after the finale of Season 2. Simone and Rasmus are still not seeing eye-to-eye about how to help the population be saved from the virus. Rasmus wants to infect others with the version of the virus that lives inside of him, while his sister wants to discover a cure.
At the end of the second season, Rasmus had joined forces with Sten (Johannes Bah Kuhnke), the leader of Apollon aka the villain group. They decide to start infecting people with the virus.
Scared by what her brother has become, Simone escapes him and joins up with a new group of survivors. This group has discovered that the cure lives inside of a flower, but that it needs to be carefully extracted.
Rasmus later finds out that Sten does not have people's best interests at heart, and he kills him. He still infects Simone's boyfriend, Martin (Mikkel Følsgaard), who thinks that Simone died when she fell.
While infected, Martin finds out that Simone is still alive, and he tries to get the siblings back together one last time. Martin dies while trying to reunite the Andersen siblings, which angers Rasmus.
Rasmus then tries to recruit an army to kill his sister. She later comes to the realization that she must kill her brother so the rest of humanity can have a chance at getting the cure.
But, he recognizes the error of his ways, and he sacrifices himself along with his love, Sarah (Clara Rosager), in the final moments of the series for the sake of everyone else.
All three seasons of The Rain are available to stream on Netflix now.
