Over the years, bantamweight mixed martial arts fighter José Aldo has made quite a reputation for himself. Having gotten his start back in 2005 as a lightweight competing in UFC, he would go on to be practically undefeated in several different weight classes. Between November 2005 and 2015, he won an astounding 18 fights in a row. Overall, he won 32 out of the 40 fights he's ever fought and has since been named one of the greatest featherweights in MMA and UFC history. And he hasn't stopped there.
In 2024, José returned after a two-year hiatus following his loss to Merab Dvalishvili. He came out swinging on May 4, 2024, dominating Jonathan Martinez at UFC 301. He continues to add titles and accomplishments under his belt in both MMA and boxing and has easily become one of the most recognizable names in the sport. However, José Aldo is also easily recognizable from the scar on the left side of his face. Thanks to his recent success, fans are once again curious about what happened to his face.
José Aldo has had his scar for practically his entire life.
The only other thing that MMA fans would know José Aldo for aside from his substantial MMA reputation is the scar on his face. The MMA fighter is known for the distinct scar that runs from the left corner of his lip and circles partway around his face. It's a great look for a fighter as reputable as him, and it must certainly look intimidating to anyone who ends up in the ring with him. One could easily mistake it for something he got during a fight, but he's had it for far longer than that.
In fact, he's had this scar since he was a baby. In a 2009 interview with Yahoo! Sports, he revealed that the scar came from an incident with his sisters. According to him, his father had placed him in a playpen that happened to be close to an active barbecue grill. Not long after that, his two older sisters (who were still children themselves at the time) placed him inside the grill as a sort of prank. As one might expect, this left him with the permanent scar for which he's currently known.
At the time of the interview, José wasn't too broken up about it. He and his sisters essentially wrote it off as a "kids will be kids" sort of incident. Either way, he was able to establish a successful career for himself as an MMA fighter.
It's safe to say that José Aldo will continue to carve out his legacy into the future, but everyone recognizes him by now as an accomplished fighter, scar or no scar.
