Believe It or Not — These Four Soap Operas Are Still on TV
Updated May 19 2020, 5:01 p.m. ET
While many of us are still practicing social distancing and following stay-at-home orders, we’re also trying to work from home. Working from home definitely has its perks: changing a load of laundry during a meeting, sweatpants are the new business casual and if you’re not stuck in a Zoom call, you can turn on the TV while you work.
Daytime TV has always been a different breed and that includes the legacy of soap operas. On Jan. 31, 1949, the first TV daytime soap opera, These Are My Children, premiered on NBC in Chicago. Since then, there have been several soap operas created and canceled. While some were short-lived, there are others that have truly stood the test of time.
Soap operas thrive off of overdramatic and scripted sagas. There will always be torrid affairs and wild storylines in which someone is almost always faking their death. It’s hard to believe but there are a handful of daytime soap operas that are still airing new episodes in 2020.
'The Bold and the Beautiful'
The Bold and the Beautiful is one of the longest-running soaps still on TV. Set in Los Angeles, the show started in 1987 and continues to churn out episodes in 2020. The show even still touts actors from the original cast like John McCook played who plays Eric Forrester and Katherine Kelly Lang who plays Brooke Logan.
The B&B has also had its fair share of celebrity appearances, like Usher, Betty White, and Real Housewives star, Denise Richards. The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays, at 1:30 p.m. ET, on CBS.
'General Hospital'
If you thought that The Bold and the Beautiful had been on television for a long time, may we introduce you to General Hospital? The longest-running soap of all time has been on the air since 1963. According to the ABC website, General Hospital has been living the tradition of passion, intrigue, and adventure, taking place in the fictional town of Port Charles, in upstate New York.
General Hospital airs weekdays, at 2 p.m. ET, on ABC.
'Days of Our Lives'
Since 1965, Days of Our Lives has entranced fans by sharing the stories and romantic affairs of the Horton family. On the wilder side of soap operas, Days of our Lives has had storylines about paternity issues, horror, and one time, even a time jump.
Days of Our Lives airs weekdays, at 1 p.m. ET, on NBC.
'The Young and the Restless'
Does the title of this soap hit a little different during quarantine times? The Young and the Restless has been on television since 1973 and has delighted fans with tales from Genoa City. As the highest-rated soap opera on TV right now, this soap takes an everyday person out of their ordinary life and into the scandals, love triangles, and affairs of a wide variety of characters centering around the Newman, Abbott, Baldwin and Winters families.
The Young and the Restless airs weekdays, at 12:30 p.m. ET, on CBS.
