Many elated Boston Celtics fans ready to party after the team — in their record-setting 18th championship — beat the Mavericks in Game 5 of the NBA finals on Monday, June 17, 2024.
So, when is the championship parade through the city? Here's what we know.
When will the Celtics parade be?
NBC Boston reports that the recent heat wave has pushed the parade to Friday, June 21.
According to the route listed on Boston.gov (where you can also find a helpful map), the parade's festivities will kick off at 11 a.m. on Causeway Street, then follow Staniford Street to Cambridge Street and then Tremont Street before hitting Boylston Street, ending by the Hynes Convention Center.
Fans are expecting to see the team riding on the city's famous Duck Boats. The Boston Duck Tours website notes that 12 championship teams have ridden in the boats since 2002.
In fact, Boston 25 News confirmed from sources that "[as] many as 25 duck boats could be used to transport players, coaches, and staff."
Per the Boston Duck Tours site, the boats were "originally used as Army vehicles and had great back decks. This way, the players could stand on and wave to the crowds below. It was close enough to get these players right up to their fans. But, also far enough to keep them from being mobbed by the crowds."
Because of the heat, City Hall Plaza as well as the Boston Common on Tremont Street will reportedly have misting centers to help cool off parade-goers.
Also thanks to the heat, the parade is reportedly expected to keep things relatively short at around 90 minutes.
In fact, the MBTA Commuter Rail account on Twitter/X wrote the following:
"@celtics are now 2024 NBA Champions!! Thinking about the parade? Here are some important tips if you're traveling for the parade: -Expect heavy crowding on trains & long queues at stations. -Stay hydrated during the day. -Train delays due to heavy parade ridership!"
And speaking of heat — the Celtics team headed along with their trophy to Miami to enjoy a much-deserved break in the meantime.
Oh, and if you need an excuse to get out of work or class to attend the parade, the Only in Boston Twitter/X account provided a helpful template you can use:
But above all else, remember to stay safe out there in the blazing temperatures, folks!
