In an era of extreme wealth inequality, it can be easy to think that the average person is utterly powerless. A group of TikTok users are trying to change that and they're doing it by using one of the simplest tools at their disposal — the power to block people.

Why are people blocking celebrities?

This blocking frenzy was kicked off in response to the 2024 Met Gala, which is one of the biggest displays of wealth that happens every year. The Met Gala features famous people dressed up in a bunch of absurd and absurdly expensive outfits. A TikTok user with the handle @ladyfromtheoutside appears to have kicked off the trend and is explicitly echoing the populist cries of the French Revolution.

“It’s time for the people to conduct what I call a ‘digital guillotine.’ A ‘Digitine,’ if you will. It’s time to block all the celebrities, influencers, and wealthy socialites who are not using their resources to help those in dire need," she said.

Although she didn't call out any cause in particular, she suggested that users start by blocking Khalil across social media.

What is the celebrity blockout 2024?

Because the people are ultimately the ones responsible for a celebrity's power, the argument is that they can also take it away. The trend has already caught on in some corners of TikTok, and users are being encouraged to block these accounts across their social media, but also on channels like Spotify if they happen to be artists.

These celebs haven't used their platforms to forcefully advocate for those in need, according to these people, so they deserve to be blocked.

Who is on the list of celebrities that have been blocked?

There's no master list of celebrities that are being blocked, but some names have come up in multiple videos as popular choices, including Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Selena Gomez, Zendaya, The Rock, Miley Cyrus, and many others.

Basically, if the person has a huge following on social media, the goal is to cause them to lose as many followers as possible.

Blocking celebrities may not be the most effective form of activist.

While people are certainly well within their rights to follow or block whoever they want, it's also true that many of these celebrities aren't as powerful as they may sometimes seem. While they are wealthy, they aren't the wealthiest people in America, and they are often much more outspoken politically than the billionaires who are less well known.

Even if these celebrities could insight change, it isn't clear whether losing followers on social media would be enough to actually cause that change. Having that kind of revolutionary spirit can feel good, but your senator probably has a lot more power to shape your life than Rihanna.
