Every so often, there will be a post uploaded by someone who proudly chows down on raw meat. It's a concept that freaks folks out.
Won't you get salmonella? Won't parasites wreak havoc on your gut and give you food poisoning? How can you stomach it?
For some folks, they discuss their penchant for chowing down on uncooked animal flesh as a gimmick about how they've been able to attain super sweet gains while leaving out the fact they're injecting themselves with performance enhancing drugs to help them look one of the barbarians Russel Crowe kills in Gladiator.
And then there are people who are castigated as being "freaks" and having an "addiction" to eating raw meat, and then there are those who need to do it for health reasons, like this guy who says that he invests in ensuring he's purchasing the highest quality fresh meat and poultry available.
And even though there have been meat eating outliers like this who have popped up in the news throughout the years, every time someone else begins talking about their raw meat diet, folks are shocked.
Much like many folks who responded to Ashley English's (@byashleyenglish) TikTok montage that she posted of what she eats in a day. Her post begins with a selfie of herself in bed, the sun cascading through the window and framing her blushed cheeks, a book in front of her.
"What I eat in a day As a girl who eats raw meat," she writes in the overlay before the clip transitions to the meal in question.
"Breakfast" is the title of that first meal: it consists of "Raw milk...Oranges...Ribeye...Smoked oysters"
The ribeye is prepared in a similar fashion to the orange slices she refers to: its sliced up and uncooked.
Her "Snack" is comprised of "Coffee & raw cream" along with "Another orange" and "Coconut butter" which are placed in a brown decorative bowl. The shards of coconut butter kind of look like they could be pieces of Parmesan Reggiano.
And while she may be a fan of drinking raw milk and eating meat that's been uncooked, Ashley doesn't seem to take the same liberties when it comes to her "Duck eggs" which appear to be cooked and scrambled.
She also consumes some "kiwi and passion fruit" which she arranges with her protein along with another glass of "raw milk" she eats barefoot on some grass. She calls the fruit combination "Divine"
Her "Post workout snack" is a "Spoonfull of honey" which she shows off on camera, and next up is a tin of "Skinless, Boneless, Smoked Sardine Fillets"
"Sardines & Sunset" she writes of the meal, indicating that the canned fish are an end-of-the-day-meal she's about to enjoy.
Dinner is more red meat: a big plate of Ribeye coated in some "Fres chimichurri" along with "Sauerkraut" and "Gruyere" cheese with some "Bone Marrow"
Right before bed, Ashley caps off her day of eating with a "Bedtime snack" which consists of "Yogurt & maple syrup" along with a cup of "Herbal tea" and "More Gruyere"
Ashley clarifies in a caption for the video that while raw meat isn't the only way she consumes her animal protein that she does believe in the numerous health benefits it can purportedly provide.
"Raw meat has been eaten by many cultures around the world for thousands of years, and still is. Just like we eat raw fish in sushi, you can also eat other meats uncooked and raw meat actually contains more bioavailable nutrients than cooked meat. Of course, I recommend sourcing from local farms and buying grass-fed & organic meats," she adds.
The TikToker concluded her caption by writing: "I don't only eat raw meat, and I ALWAYS listen to my body to eat intuitively. This is an example of how I eat in a day to feel nourished, healthy, happy, and strong."
Folks who saw her slideshow of foods weren't so convinced that this type of lifestyle was healthy for someone to adopt, with numerous people questioning her multiple servings of raw milk in a day: "Raw meat I’m less concerned with. Raised on a dairy farm however the raw milk is concerning," one person wrote.
This was a sentiment echoed by someone else who penned: "I lived on a farm for my whole life. The FIRST thing i was thought is to NEVER drink raw milk."
"What do you mean raw milk!?" someone else remarked.
Other views had different concerns, like this person who penned: "I feel like someone who eats straight raw meat everyday would eat me"
The CDC writes that there are some foods that "are more likely than others to contain germs that can make you sick. These foods include: Raw and undercooked foods from animals, including meat, chicken and other poultry, eggs, raw (unpasteurized) milk and products made from it, and seafood."
